An Exploratory Study on the Self-Reflective Experience of Focusing Poetry-Picture Making Work Reported by Counselors

Abstract

This study intended to understand the nature of counselors' experiences who participated focusing poetry-picture making program for self-reflection which is an important factor for the counselors¡¯ professional development. Using phenomenological method, in-depth interview and personal records of 10 counselors were analyzed. Based on the meaningful statements obtained from the analysis of the participants¡¯ statements, six sub-components and three central themes were derived. Central themes were consisted of three areas: ¡®Self acceptance¡¯, ¡®Received empathy¡¯, and ¡®Able to know what one needs¡¯ and sub-components were ¡®Confronting uncomfortable parts¡¯, ¡®Able to organize various parts¡¯, ¡®Feeling companionship¡¯, ¡®Able to focus on oneself¡¯, ¡®Confirmation by expressing¡¯, ¡®Aware one¡¯s needs¡¯. The results of this study showed that the focusing poetry-picture making work enhanced the self-reflection of counselors by accepting oneself as he/she is, able to empathize and have awareness. Since this study was conducted for counselors who are interested in focusing experiential therapy, follow-up study of experiences of counselors who are interested in different approach of focusing poetry-picture making work is suggested.
